This article provides a comprehensive analysis of Shakarim Kudaiberdiev’s work “The Genealogy of the Turks, Kyrgyz-Kazakhs and Khans” (1911) within the context of the development of Kazakh historiography and the formation of national historical consciousness. Shezhire (Arabic shajarat — branch, offshoot) represents a branch of historical knowledge that narrates the origin and settlement of peoples. The tradition of transmitting tribal genealogy from generation to generation, both orally and in written form, is characteristic of culturally developed societies. However, Shakarim’s shezhire goes far beyond a narrow genealogical description and encompasses a much broader range of historical issues. The work addresses not only the origin and historical development of a single people but also synthesizes materials of a wider civilizational scale. The study examines the problems of the ethnogenesis of the Kazakh people, the idea of Turkic historical continuity, the genealogical legitimation of khan authority, and the role of shezhire as an institution of cultural memory. Shakarim systematizes the origin of the Kazakhs through the line Noah – Japheth – Turk – Oghuz, linking Kazakh history to the Islamic and Turkic civilizational space. The article scientifically substantiates the argument that the shezhire is not merely a genealogical text but a conceptual work aimed at forming national historical consciousness. Based on source criticism, textual analysis, and comparative-historical methods, the internal structure of the work and its place in historiography are determined. The results of the study reveal the significance of Shakarim’s shezhire in affirming the historical subjectivity of the Kazakh people.
