The Turkestan region has long been one of the regions where ethnic processes are actively taking place. In different historical periods, the Turkestan region became the center of trade, economic, and political ties. Turkestan was the capital of the Kazakh Khanate. It also influenced the activity of interethnic relations. As a result, many languages were used in this region. During the years of tsarist Russia and Soviet rule, there were many settlers in the Turkestan region. All this has shaped the linguistic characteristics of the region's population. In the course of the article, the attitude of the local population to the modern language situation in the Turkestan region will be analyzed, and the current language policy will be determined. The results of research in this area are analyzed. Thus, the problem of historical continuity is revealed. Researchers conduct a survey and identify the problem of multilingualism in sparsely populated areas of the city and ethnic communities (Uzbeks, Kazakhs). In a multilingual environment, the priority role of the Kazakh language in society is determined.
It is known that during the Soviet era, the Latin alphabet was used in Kazakhstan. Today, the society is actively discussing the issue of switching to the Latin alphabet as a result of historical continuity. In the course of the article, different views of respondents on the translation of the Kazakh alphabet into Latin were revealed, while the most common arguments in support of this transition coincide with the statements provided by the official information support for language reforms.
