Abstract

The article describes the images of fantastic animals that have become widespread in the toreutics of the Kimaks. The Kimaks are Turkic tribes who created the state in the Ob-Irtysh interfluve in the IXth century. In the toreutics of the Kimaks, the floral elements play a leading role and anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, geometric elements occupy a certain place.
An interesting group in medieval toreutics is occupied by the images of fantastic animals. When they are reproduced, the specificity of steppe art is convincingly shown – the images and elements of ornaments borrowed from other cultures, received their interpretation based on the established artistic techniques. The following images are presented in the toreutics of the Kimaks: feline predator, dragon, phoenix, griffin, Senmurv - a winged horse. These images were used in the design of the costume, military and horse equipment. The images are locally specific. So, for example, Senmurv is a character that combines the appearance of a bird of prey, lion or dog; on the plaque from the Irtysh region, it almost completely resembles a dog.
