KITCHEN UTENSILS FROM THE MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT OF SYGANAK (OPINIONS AND REASONING)

Published December 2022
Abstract

During the excavations of the medieval settlement of Syganak in 2020, four bowls were found under an inverted cauldron on the southwestern outskirts of excavation No. 19. In previous years, during excavations in some parts of the city, fragments of ceramic dastarkhans were found. These findings can tell us about the culinary culture of the gamenak people. Judging from the point of view of cleanliness, the fact that the dishes are covered with a cauldron on top reminds us of the modern rules of behavior in the kitchen of our modern women. At the same time, probably already at that time, ideas about the existence of "harmful mystical forces" were widespread among the inhabitants. This situation seems to be intertwined with the beliefs of the Kazakhs, who necessarily cover the dishes from above, at least with a twig. And if we look at this ancient rite from the point of view of traditions, we will see that in the Kazakh everyday tradition, the rite of overturning the cauldron was performed on the grave of a person without heirs. Therefore, it is quite possible that under the closed vessels the secrets of the worldview and spiritual life of the former gamenak are hidden. In the article, the cauldron and cups discovered during the excavations are considered in connection with the daily everyday practice and beliefs and rituals of the Kazakhs. The research methods used were methodological description, comparison and analytical analysis.
