Abstract

Kazakh carpet weaving is one of the unique traditional practices of women which, despite the vicissitudes of the twentieth century, has survived to the present day. However, every year there are fewer and fewer women practicing the traditional format.

Rites, rituals, festivals, music, ideas about the universe, myths, legends, superstitions and much more are harmoniously “woven” into the “fabric” of carpet weaving. This means that when we lose it, we risk losing much more than meets the eye.

This article focuses on the research, preservation and development of Kazakh carpet weaving as an important part of intangible cultural heritage. Within the framework of the outlined, the authors highlight a number of topical areas of activity.

Within the framework of the indicated, the authors identify a number of topical areas for further research into the phenomenon of Kazakh carpet weaving related to issues of regional and tribal specificity; rituals and ceremonies accompanying the process of weaving; folk beliefs associated with weaving tools. In addition, the article reveals the essence of some measures for the preservation and development of traditional carpet weaving.

The article is based on fieldwork by experts of the National Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Kazakhstan mainly among the artisans of Kyzylorda region in 2022-2023 and in other regions of the country (preliminary research).
