This article discusses various approaches to understanding the term "historical memory", as well as the meaning of historical memory in modern Kazakhstan society. The growing interest in the past and the phenomenon of collective memory has led to a broader discussion as an important element of the interaction of individual and social consciousness with the past. In revealing the content of the problem, the author relies on the works of domestic and foreign scientists-philosophers, sociologists, historians and cultural scientists such as Kurbangali Khalid, A. Baitursynov and Maurice Halbwachs, John.Collingwood, Pierre Nora, Jan Assman, et al.
The work was carried out within the framework of the state program of the MES "History and culture of the great Steppe" (2018-2020).
