Borders have existed since the emergence of States, and in history they are mentioned and described in the first written works. To date, several genres of literature have been formed that give an interpretation of their essence, the history of their origin and development, and their changing role in the life of the country and peoples.
This article examines the initial data on borders, their outlines, the regime in the border zone and the rules for the movement of people, goods and ideas through it contained in the Advisory treaties and agreements, laws and legal acts of States. Encyclopedic and reference publications are devoted to their interpretation, and descriptions of the processes of emergence and change are contained in works on geography and country studies, the history of countries and peoples, theory and history of State and law. The activities of state administration bodies and Border guards and their outstanding representatives are covered not only in official documents, but also in works of fiction and art.
The border is the most important attribute of statehood, the first border to ensure the national interests and security of the country.
