This article explores the role of warriors (batyrs), the institution of batyrhood, and their place in traditional Kazakh society, including their everyday lives. Every nation’s history includes unique structures that define its development. One of the key elements that shape the national identity of the Kazakh people is the batyrs. The topic is examined through the lens of notable batyrs from the 18th–19th centuries, a period significant in Kazakhstan’s history. Throughout various nations and historical periods, batyrs have symbolized bravery and leadership. The formation of the Kazakh nation and its emergence on the historical stage were greatly influenced by the wisdom, skill, and courage of these warriors. Accounts of Kazakh batyrs can be found in the writings of Western European and Russian historians, travelers, and officials of the Russian imperial administration. For example, in reference to the Khan of the Junior Zhuz, Abulkhair, an English traveler mentions Janibek Batyr, Bökenbay Batyr, and Baimurat Batyr. Russian historian P.I. Rychkov, in his work, describes Argyn Janibek and Tama Yeset, highlighting their diplomatic roles. Meanwhile, Andreev’s writings reveal how the Tsarist government provided monetary rewards of up to one hundred rubles to certain batyrs near fortifications to gain their support. Thus, it cannot be said that there is a lack of information about batyrs — they were widely discussed in their time due to their relevance and importance.
