The article was aimed at studying the significance of history education in the process of forming national identity in schools in Kazakhstan. During the study, changes in the development of educational content for the subject "History of Kazakhstan" were considered in historical retrospect. The object of the study is the educational content of the history of Kazakhstan in the country's schools, and the subject of the study is the importance of historical education in shaping the national identity of youth. Within the framework of the subject of the study, factors contributing to the historical education and formation of the national identity of students were analyzed. To reveal the importance of the formation of national identity among young people in the history of Kazakhstan, special attention was paid to the issues of state compulsory education standards (SCES), the development of textbooks, and the peculiarities of the content of education.

As a result, it was noted that in the period from 1991 to 2024, many activities related to improving the quality of educational content were carried out in Kazakhstan. However, due to various factors, further progress in this area was characterized by the low potential of the domestic school of textbook writing and the development and examination of educational content. To determine the quality of teaching the history of Kazakhstan, a unified national test (UNT) has been defined, showing an objective indicator. However, it has been suggested that the UNT does not fully reflect the learning outcomes required by the updated educational content. Based on the importance of history education in the formation of national identity, it was studied that the authorities sought to address the issue of teaching the history of Kazakhstan by adopting several programs at the state level. In his reports and messages, it was noted that the President of Kazakhstan paid special attention to the issue of teaching the history of Kazakhstan. To improve the content of teaching the history of Kazakhstan, practical recommendations are given.
