Abstract

Sacred spaces in the western regions of Kazakhstan occupy a central place in the cultural and religious life, serving as important centers for spiritual purification, worship, and the preservation of traditions. Such sites, including holy graves, mausoleums, and mosques, are closely associated with the cult of local saints, whose lives and deeds serve as examples of spirituality and moral values. Special significance is attached to sacred sites related to saints such as Beket Ata, Shopan Ata, Sisem Ata, Ushkan Ata, Koshkar Аta Necropolis, Arykpan Ata, Arystan Ata, Ahon Аta, and others, whose mausoleums and holy places become major centers of pilgrimage and spiritual purification. The veneration of these saints contributes to the strengthening of the social identity of local communities, as well as the maintenance and transmission of spiritual traditions across generations. Sacred sites not only fulfill religious functions but also serve as symbols of social cohesion, uniting people around common beliefs and historical memory. The role of these sites in the formation of local authority is also significant, as many of them are associated with renowned religious figures whose names and deeds remain in the collective memory of the people. The study of sacred spaces in western Kazakhstan reveals their multifaceted significance in the cultural and spiritual landscape of the region, as well as their role in maintaining cultural connections and spiritual practices within local communities. Special attention in the research is given to analyzing the interconnection between sacred sites and their role in shaping spiritual and social identity, which requires the application of a comprehensive approach, including ethnographic studies and the analysis of historical, archaeological, and written sources.
