The article examines the role of khan's power in Kazakh society on the basis of materials of the journal "Sibirsky Vestnik". The authors analyse articles and notes published in the journal in the 19th century and conclude that the khan's power was an important institution that ensured the unity and stability of Kazakh society. Khan power played an important role in the defence of Kazakh lands from external enemies. The khans concluded alliances with other states, organised military campaigns and protected the Kazakh population from nomadic raids. In addition, khans acted as supreme judges and settled disputes between Kazakhs. They also monitored the observance of law and order in Kazakh society.
The article also notes that the khan's power was not absolute. It was limited by the traditions and customs of Kazakh society. Khans had to take into account the opinion of the clan nobility and listen to the wishes of the people. The authors of the article also note that in the 19th century the khan's power began to weaken. This was due to a number of factors, including the growing influence of Russia, internal strife among the Kazakh nobility and the weakening of traditional Kazakh institutions.
